Another case of mob lynching has been reported last Sunday. Asif Khan, a gym trainer from the Mewat region of Haryana was lynched by a mob of Hindu national militants.
Asif Khan was forced to chant “Jai Shri ram” before he was lynched by a mob of Hindu nationalists. According to his family, Asif Khan went to the Sohan district along with his friends, Wasif and Rashid from Khalilpur to get medicines. Wasif and Rashid were also attacked by the mob however they managed to escape while Asif died.
Hasan Khan, Asif’s uncle told Media “a group of 15 people stopped the car and started abusing the passengers, they shouted ‘maar mulle ko’- kill Muslims” the mob then lynched Asif.
Asif Khan’s body was found in Nangli which is a village near Sohna. According to a media report, the Haryana police has filed an FIR against the culprits under IPC 302. As of monday 6 accused have been arrested after massive outrage in the region as well as on social media. Asif’s funeral was held on Monday amidst heavy deployment in the khalilpur village.
According to a media report, the villagers have also claimed that the Haryana police have arrested several people protesting against the lynching of Asif khan.
After the news of Asif’s lynching was out #justiceforasif was seen trending on social media platforms demanding justice for the brutal killing of Asif.
Mewat region of Haryana and Rajasthan is a Muslim dominated area that has observed a surge in atrocities against Muslims especially after 2014. On 1 April 2017, Pehlu Khan was attacked by the cow vigilantes in Alwar. Pehlu khan, a 55-year-old dairy farmer was falsely accused of smuggling cattle. Pehlu Khan succumbed to his injuries and died on 3 April 2017 in a hospital.
In another incident in July 2018, Akbar Khan was also lynched by a mob in Alwar. Akbar Khan was also lynched on suspicion of smuggling cows. Last year in 2020, a Hindu group attacked their Muslim neighbours for not switching the lights off in the ‘9 baje 9-minute’ program announced by the prime minister. The four brothers of the Muslim family was attacked by sharp weapons on the following day. They all suffered severe head injuries.Asif’s case is just another incident added to the long list of atrocities that the minorities have been witnessing in recent years.
